• Record number of applications: Now the 18 winning ideas for safe, collaborative robots have been found

Ideas for safe, collaborative robot technology have poured in for the European project COVR's third and final application round.

As many as 90 applicants have submitted their proposals to the pool of candidates for a COVR Award – an eleven percent increase compared to the most recent application round.

- All the application rounds have attracted a lot of attention, so what really makes this final round a success, is the fact that we have received a much more diverse pool of proposals. We see a lot of new technologies and domains represented, taking cobot technology beyond the manufacturing floor, says Aske Bach Lassen, project manager of the COVR project at the Danish Technological Institute (DTI).

Unfortunately, not everyone can win. Out of the 90 applications, the 18 best have been selected for funding. Winners will receive support from the COVR consortium, access to state-of-the-art testing equipment along with up to €150.000.

Winning projects from all over Europe
Most of the funded projects have been proposed by consortiums which means that 38 European companies now can celebrate being part of a COVR Award. The companies are from Greece, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Denmark, and France.

- One of the goals of COVR is to make safety validation the same across Europe, so we are glad to see that the projects have a good geographical spread. This allows us to familiarize with regional best practice for safety, and also gives us good ambassadors for promoting the COVR Toolkit and protocols, says Aske Bach Lassen.

Sharing experiences
The winning companies will soon kick off their projects for increasing safety of people who share workspace with robots. The projects will be a collaboration with the COVR consortium partners and will span over 9 months.

- Sharing knowledge is at the heart of these projects – the COVR consortium have experts in robot standardization, regulation, and testing, so we can teach the companies about these things. On the other hand, the companies are domain experts and provide the real-world cases that we often struggle to come up with while working in the labs, says Aske Bach Lassen.

The projects will ultimately give rise to a wealth of experience and knowledge in safety and validation, which will be gathered by the COVR project and made available to European industry through an online platform: the COVR Toolkit.
